I Love It When He Does That

I’ve been overwhelmed of late; much has happened. Some major--some not so much:
- A dear friend suddenly became very ill.
- My cat got sick, which also brings financial crisis.
- I’m stressed about buying a new car.
- My writing (or the lack thereof) has gotten me down.
- And I’ve done some self-sabotaging by taking on new projects and over-extending.
- Of course there’s my job, which is intense and hectic on a good day.
- And through it all, I have to keep the household running.
I fall in bed exhausted so I can
start all over again the next day and end up feeling like a mouse on a wheel, running faster
and faster, and never getting anywhere.
Fortunately, Sunday always comes and I have the opportunity
to go to church. Hanging out with other believers and participating in worship
recharges my batteries. It helps get me back on track and refocused. I learn,
grow, and bask in the glow of warm friendships.
It’s my safe place.
I especially love the half hour drive to and from. On the
way, I can make an effort to let go of my troubles and get ready to receive
what God has for me. But this week I struggled. I’d shove one thing aside,
start singing with the radio, and next thing I knew, one of those pesky issues from
the above list would slither in to distract me. I was just about ready to throw
my hands up in defeat when God whispered a verse into my heart:
Come to me all you who are weary and carry heavy burdens,
and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am
humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls. Matthew 11.28-30 NLT
The tension eased from my shoulders, replaced by slow, relaxed
breathing. It dawned on me that I’d been carrying a load that I didn’t have to.
I hadn’t been trusting God to help me with my troubles nor had I asked for
direction. (I tend to run ahead of him, plunging forward with my own agenda.)
I’d been trying to go it alone.
Church was awesome. I soaked in his presence while the music
ministered to my weary soul. We heard good preaching and had baptism. But best
of all, there was a little tidbit shared during the service that appeared to be
just for me:
The Lord says to give him the battle & the burden. Trust him and he will help you.
Confirmation? I’d say so.
I love it when he does that.
